The hammer is a unappreciated tool, often perceived in our electronic age as being crude, primitive, and even unnecessary. But, it is the greatest tool of the blacksmith, for it is with his hammer, that the blacksmith transforms bars of steel into functional items and tools. One of the greatest advantages of the blacksmith is his ability to make his own tools. Starting with making slot punches and drifts, you will use them to punch and shape the eyes of the hammers. After forging, you will grind, heat-treat, and fit handles to them, leaving with a hammer ready to use. You will learn about the many different types of hammers, and the uses they are put to in blacksmithing. You can expect to return home with several hammers you have made yourself, and tools and and knowledge needed to make more.
