If you are interested in beekeeping, this full day of instruction and activities is for you! This class will introduce you to the essentials you will need to know in your first year or two as a beginning beekeeper. You will learn about the anatomy and life cycle of the bee and the colony, (the colony is the super organism), selecting a apiary site, and the basic tools and equipment essential to keeping bees in Langstroth style hives. The terminology and use of each piece of equipment will be addressed, regional issues for beekeeping in the mid-west. as well as diseases and pests most likely to affect a honey bee colony. You will learn how to obtain bees, starting them in your apiary and feeding them, in addition to the importance of seasonal management and hive inspections. Weather and bees permitting, this will be supplemented with a hands-on in-hive inspection, and honey harvesting demonstration. Of course, no one will go home without a sweet sample!
