Blacksmithing 203 - Axe and Tomahawk Making (Oct 31st - Nov 2nd)

$525.00

Prerequisites: Blacksmithing 100, Blacksmithing 200, Forge-Welding

Skill Level: Seasoned Beginner

Age Requirement: None

Making tools is the heart of iron work from the earliest days.  There is nothing quite like using tools that you have made yourself, and an axe is one tool that everyone needs.  It can be used to split firewood, clear fence rows, create rustic (or not so rustic) wood products, or you can carry it with you on a hiking trail.  The first day will focus on the “secrets” of successful forge-welding, from careful attention to the fire, to the proper preparation of scarfs, and the application of flux.  You will make a medium size hand axe using traditional methods of forge-welding a high-carbon steel edge into a low-carbon steel body.  Beginning with flat bars of steel, you will learn the whole process from forging, heat-treating, grinding and sharpening.  The class will conclude with making and fitting your own handle to your axe, ready to use.
